Selecting the Right Components for Your Skid Sprayer

Choosing the ideal components for your skid sprayer depends on your specific application. A system designed for lawn spraying will differ significantly from one used for ornamental spraying. The first question we always ask is: What will this system be used for? From there, we can customize the configuration, mixing and matching components to create a tailored solution that meets your business needs, rather than relying on a standard, off-the-shelf sprayer.

Determining the Proper Tank Size

To select the appropriate tank size, begin by calculating your vehicle’s weight capacity. As a quick guideline, multiply the tank size (in gallons) by 10 to estimate the total loaded weight, including liquid and system components. For example, a 200-gallon sprayer will weigh approximately 2,000 pounds when full.

A unique advantage of Gregson-Clark Sprayers is their expandability. Our modular tank design allows you to easily add a second tank to a new or existing skid, enabling you to apply multiple products or increase capacity as your business grows.

Selecting the Right Pump

Pump selection depends on several factors, including flow rate, pressure requirements, and spray distance. All Gregson-Clark skid sprayers feature jet agitation, which recirculates excess fluid within the tank to maintain a consistent mixture.

Our most popular pump, the Kappa-43, delivers 10.5 GPM at 540 RPM. As an example, when spraying turf at a calibrated rate of 2 GPM, approximately 8.5 GPM is returned to the tank for agitation.

Pump performance is especially important for applications requiring long spray distances, whether horizontally or vertically. Using the Kappa-43 as an example, this pump provides a maximum of 10.5 GPM and 560 PSI. When paired with ½" hose, it can spray in the upper 20- to lower 30-foot range. It’s important to note that spray distance depends on both pressure and volume, not pressure alone. For complex setups, our team can assist in designing the right system for your needs.

Hose and Reel Options

Hose and hose reel selection should align with your application requirements. Our most common configuration includes Hannay 12-volt electric rewind reels, though manual rewind options are also available. Each reel is pre-wired and includes a quick-disconnect battery cable for simple installation to your vehicle’s battery. When removing your sprayer, simply unplug the cable. The main harness remains in the vehicle, ready for easy reconnection when the sprayer is reinstalled.

Vehicle Compatibility

Your vehicle type determines which skid sprayers will be compatible. Our V-Series skids are designed to fit both pickup trucks and vans. In the pickup configuration, the pump and engine are mounted on the driver’s side, while the hose reel is positioned on the passenger side. For vans, both the pump/engine and hose reel are installed on the same side to allow convenient access through the van door. We also offer fully custom systems to fit any vehicle, as well as modular options that provide flexible and cost-effective customization.

Gregson-Clark skid sprayers include a two-year warranty covering manufacturing defects on all components we produce. Components supplied by other manufacturers are covered under their respective warranties—for example, Hannay hose reels include a three-year warranty against manufacturing defects. Please note that warranty coverage applies only to defects in materials or workmanship and does not include common wear items such as diaphragms or seals.
